Tuzet (1963) noted that despite the fact that sponges had the most primitive characteristics, they were regarded diversified animals produced throughout the evolution of Metazoa and were classified as Parazoa. Due to the peculiar cellular organisation of these organisms, Huxely (1875) and Sollas (1894) considered classifying them separately from Metazoa.Grant classified sponges in the phylum Porifera in 1830. They are a successful and diverse group that inhabits both marine and freshwater environments. ![]()
